Bamboo is a low-maintenance material compared to most outdoor lumber, but a little know-how goes a long way toward getting a clean installation and a long lifespan. Here's what we tell every customer before their order ships.
Before installation
Measure twice — bamboo poles and fencing panels are typically sold in standard diameters and heights, so confirm your framing or post spacing matches what you've ordered before work begins. If your project involves structural framing (a pergola, a bar, a covered structure), we recommend involving a contractor familiar with natural materials, since fastening bamboo differs slightly from dimensional lumber.
During installation
Bamboo should be kept off direct ground contact where possible — setting posts in gravel or using post anchors rather than burying bamboo directly in soil will significantly extend its life by reducing moisture exposure at the base.
Ongoing care
Our bamboo is treated for outdoor durability, but like any natural material, it benefits from periodic attention:
- Rinse off dust and debris with a hose every few months.
- Apply an outdoor-rated sealant or oil once a year (twice in harsher climates) to maintain color and weather resistance.
- Trim back any plants or irrigation that keep the bamboo consistently damp, since prolonged moisture is the main driver of premature wear.
What to expect over time
Natural bamboo will weather slightly and mellow in color over the years — many people prefer this aged look. If you want to maintain the original tone, more frequent sealing will slow that process.
